No, this isn’t about doing BI while you sit at home. Rather, it’s about how hard BI really is.
Tom Davenport has a very cogent Harvard Business post today about why it’s so hard to “connect the dots” in the case of the “underwear bomber.”
There’s been a lot of expectations placed on Business Intelligence in the past few years that haven’t been met — whether with the TSA and Department of Homeland Security or in the workplace. The best tool yet devised for sorting through and connecting chunks of disparate, differently structured information is the human eye and brain. That’s one reason I’m so high on tools such as those made by XMLaw, such as OneView Connect. They make it easy to bring information from different systems at least to a single screen, where people can make the connections.
There are fewer and more organized connections in the business world than in airline security. If we can’t get it right in the business world, it’s no surprise that there will be surprises in the real world.
On the other hand, that doesn’t explain not following up a tip from the guy’s father….
